HBO’s The Night Of is the best new series on T.V. It is a riveting drama about a young Pakistani man from Queens accused of a brutally murdering a rich White girl from Manhattan. Far better than the average crime drama, The Night Of gives a stark look at the violence, multi-level racial tensions and general anger than is pervasive in the American justice system.
Riz Ahmed is Nasir (“Naz”) Kahn, a naive and shy college student from a Pakistani family in Queens. In Manhattan he meets a beautiful but somewhat crazy young woman (Andrea). Sofia Black-D’elia gives a brilliant performance as Andrea. She is amused that Naz is so innocent, and leads him on a night of drugs and sex. However, in the morning, Andrea is dead and Naz can’t remember what happened. (By the way, Sofia Black D’elia is a local girl, having grown up in Clifton New Jersey).
Every actor in the series is superb. Bill Camp is Detective Dennis Box, who has perfected the art of speaking so kindly and gently to suspects that they are fooled into thinking he is actually a friend.
John Turturro is Naz’s lawyer Jack Stone, who is not fooled by Detective Box’s act. He tells his clients that Box is actually “a subtle beast.”
The direction and cinematography in The Night Of is fantastic. You truly feel as if you are in a police station or a prison holding cell.
So far only the first 2 episodes have aired. The Night Of is so good we wished we could binge watch the whole series right now. Like the rest of the world however, we will just have to wait to see what happens.
