Begin Again is a wonderful film that is sort of a cross between Once, and Lost In Translation. It stars Keira Knightly as Greta, a shy singer/songwriter. And guess what? Keira Knightly has a soft beautiful singing voice that is wonderful to hear. It is hard to believe that no one ever had her sing in a movie before. We give Begin Again one of our very rare Five Stars! The Song Coming Up Roses is fantastic.
Mark Ruffalo is Dan, a semi-alcoholic music producer whose personal life is a disaster. He sees Greta give a terrible performance at a New York bar, but immediately recognizes how great she could be with the right band and arrangements.
Greta and Dan begin a relationship similar to that of Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. They are at different stages in the lives and each desperately needs a true friend to talk to.
Dan and Greta love the City of New York, and decide to make an “outdoor album”, staging unauthorized quick mini-concerts throughout New York and filming them.
Hailee Steinfield is fantastic as Violet, Dan’s beautiful teenage daughter, who is going though complications in her own life. ( Most people only recognize Hailee Steinfield as being part of Taylor Swift’s Girl Squad.) Greta is able to show Dan how to reconnect with his daughter. Cathleen Keener is Dan’s estranged wife Miriam. There relationship can only be described as “complicated”.
We highly recommend this film and want to download the soundtrack.
