A Simple Favor is a terrific comedy which Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively had a ball making. The on-screen chemistry between these these two top tier actors makes A Simple Favor one of the best films of the year.
Anna Kendrick is meek and mild single mom Stephanie, who is trying to make a living hosting a dull Vlog showing people how to bake cookies, make friendship bracelets, and other such household hints. Other moms in the neighborhood watch the Vlog just so they can make fun of how bad it is.
Stephanie’s world is changed forever when she meets Emily (Blake Lively). Emily is everything Stephanie is not. Emily is tall, blonde, married to a gorgeous writer, and rich. Emily is a successful aggressive career woman with a fantastic fashion sense and exquisite clothing.
Stephanie and Emily’s kids play together, so the two moms see each other alot. Emily takes Stephanie under her wing and tries to teach Stephanie to stand up for herself and take charge of her life. The two become best friends and tell each other their deepest desires and secrets.
At the same time, Emily is taking advantage of Stephanie and Stephanie does not even realize she is working as a sort of unpaid nanny. Stephanie picks up the kids at school, cooks dinners for the the whole family and does the shopping whenever Emily has to work late. Darren (Andrew Rannells) is one of the “moms” in the neighborhood who unlike Stephanie realizes that Emily is a born user of other people.
Then Emily just disappears. Emily has supposedly gone on a business trip but then no one hears from her. Stephanie is the only person worried. Emily’s husband and co-workers all say that Emily sometimes disappears for day, weeks or even months. Stephanie decides to turn to her Vlog and ask her viewers to help in the search for Emily. The Vlog suddenly starts becoming popular, since a missing person search is much more interesting than banking oatmeal-raisin cookies. Most of the Vlog viewers are convinced that Emily is actually dead.
While the search is going on, Stephanie is running Emily’s household, a job that she becomes a little too comfortable with. She has sort of taken over Emily’s life. She cooks meals for Sean (Henry Golding) the gorgeous husband and spends most of her time in Emily’s huge house and even starts wearing Emily’s clothing.
All this strange behavior brings Stephanie to the attention of police Detective Summervile (Bashir Salahuddin) who is trying to figure just what is really going on in this bizarre suburban world. As he interviews people he realizes that no one is telling him the truth about anything. He just needs to find out which of the lies are dangerous and which are just weird.
A Simple Favor is a fun movie with multiple plot twists, dark humor and a surprise ending. It makes fun of suburban life, but not in a mean way. It is a detective mystery story wrapped in a comedy, and every actor in it is wonderful. You can tell that Blake Lively loved playing the crazy “bad girl”. Anna Kendrick has a knack for perfect comedic timing.
